Keith Turpin is Chief Instructor and owner of KI Clemmons. He became a student there in the second month of operations in February, 1994, and has been an instructor since reaching the rank of green belt. Master Turpin also has a Black Belt in the Goju Shorei Weapons System as well as previous martial arts experience in Judo and Japanese and Okinawan style Karate before coming to Karate International. He has numerous tournament and teaching awards, including the “1997 Black Belt of the Year” and “2003 AMAA Hall of Fame Instructor of the Year” awards. He has worked in sales and management for Fortune 500 companies, as well as establishing and running several businesses of his own. B.S. – Penn State University, and an MBA degree from UNC-Greensboro.

Began his martial arts training at the age of 13 in Tae Kwon Do, started with Karate International in 2003.
Began teaching as a purple belt and has taught various classes from Little Dragons to Black Belts.
Took over as owner and chief instructor of the Elkin Dojo in October 2005. Has done various self defense classes and school talks for the Yadkin, Surry and Wilkes county schools, the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts as well Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital. Has competed in numerous tournaments including the US Open held in Orlando, FL. Also has training in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu and Kung-fu. Has trained over a hundred students and has a great reputation for teaching children as well as adults. Vice President of American Martial Artists Association. Earned a Bachelor of Science in Graphic Arts and Imaging Technology from Appalachian State University.

Beyond my expectations

I began karate as a way of doing something with my children that we would do and learn together, which was a difficult thing to find when you have three people as different as my son, daughter and I were at that time. There are so many ‘family activities’ where the parent is already knowledgeable, or the only the child has real interest. I wanted to do something where each of us had our strengths and weaknesses, but where all were learning and all working for the same goal. Training with Master Williams enabled this: we became a team, each of us helping the others as we reached for our next rank, we came to respect each other’s strengths and learned to pull together around our weaknesses. However, the benefits of Karate went beyond my expectations for a family activity. It developed skills and attitudes in each of us as individuals. As my son began teaching karate, he learned patience and discernment . As my daughter competed in tournaments, she learned focus and determination. As I rose in rank I learned that even in middle age, far off goals could be realized. A warning though: Master Williams does not run a program where you succeed just by showing up. There is a lot of hard work, sweat, practice, and even bruises involved. But I can say from experience that you will get back much, much more than you put in.
